Matheson Atelier is the result of a shared passion for traditional craftsmanship and natural materials. Founded by Sam and Megan, this two-person team blends artistry, skill, and a deep respect for the materials they work with to create bespoke furniture and upholstery.
Sam’s love for woodworking was born during his 10 years running a small family hotel in the stunning landscapes of North Scotland. While designing and building extensions and outdoor areas for the hotel, he explored techniques such as the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban and steam bending. Between hosting guests and managing the hotel, Sam spent evenings carving wooden spoons and crafting custom pieces for friends and family in his garden workshop.
In 2019, Sam decided to pursue woodworking more seriously, relocating to North Devon to study fine furniture making at the prestigious David Savage School of Furniture. There, he honed his skills in traditional techniques and developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of hand tools and time-honoured methods.
Megan’s passion for design began in the fast-paced world of set and prop creation for an amateur theatre company. Her time in the workshop ignited a fascination with materials, techniques, and the intricate details that bring creative visions to life.
Seeking to expand her skills, Megan joined the David Savage School of Furniture, where she immersed herself in the history and evolution of furniture design. She developed a unique style that combines historical influences with a modern sensibility, creating pieces that are both functional and visually striking.
Megan’s rediscovery of her childhood fascination for fabrics and materials led her to explore upholstery, adding another layer of depth to her craft. Upholstery became the perfect complement to her work with Sam, enabling them to create bespoke furniture that marries beauty and comfort.
Together, Sam and Megan form Matheson Atelier, a partnership built on shared values and complementary skills. Their work celebrates the balance between form and function, using traditional techniques to craft furniture and upholstery that tell the story of the materials while enhancing the elegance of any space.
Matheson Atelier collaborates with interior designers, commercial developers, and private clients who seek to add a handmade, bespoke touch to their projects. Their dedication to craftsmanship ensures every piece is a harmonious blend of artistry and practicality.
Let Matheson Atelier bring your vision to life. Whether you’re looking for bespoke furniture, upholstery, or a unique design tailored to your needs, Sam and Megan are ready to create something extraordinary.
